Glenn Beck Questions Jerry Bruckheimer on Edited Movies
On the November 21 episode of CNN Headline News’ Glenn Beck program, the host interviewed A-list film maker Jerry Bruckheimer (Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor, 24, Deja Vu, etc.). As the five minute discussion came to an end, Beck, a self-proclaimed Mormon, asked Bruckheimer about releasing PG-versions of R-rated movies. Here’s a copy of the transcript:
BECK: Why is it — I have never been able to get anybody to answer this question for me — why is it that these movies are already edited from R to PG for airplanes, and yet they`ll release the unrated version to make an extra buck, but they won`t go the other way? There are some of us who don`t watch and consume R-rated movies. How come that doesn`t happen?
BRUCKHEIMER: I think it`s more the filmmakers and the studio decide that that`s the way the film should be presented, the way they originally made it, and don`t want to show it another way. I mean, “King Arthur” is an example that went the other way. You had a PG-13 movie in the theaters and released an R version on DVD. Now, believe it or not, the R-rated version did three times the business of the PG-13.

It breaks my heart that the R version of that movie did three times the business of the PG-!3. It says something about this country and what is happening to the morals. There are no morals except in the Christian community and even then it has become questionable. The LDS market is a pretty good size and I know I personally would go to these movies if they were changed to PG-13. There are many movies coming out right now in DEC. that are R rated that we will not go see, and it is just one or two scenes that couldn’t posssibly make any difference to the makers of the movies. There are no morals in Hollywood and very little happiness among the Hollywood people. There is a reason for it!All you have to do is pick up a magazine and see what kind of lives they are leading. Money Money Money is all they think about and that leads to al the rest. the moral decay, and any of us who still believe in morals are laughed at. What an interesting world!

Well, there’s always Clearplay even though everybody else is gone. I just hope they don’t go after them too. http://www.ClearPlayDVD.com

I was a member of Cleanfilms for years. I was shocked when they closed their doors. My wife and I are Jehovah’s Witnesses and refuse to rent/buy R-rated movies. I’m currently online looking for a new solution since we haven’t watched an R-rated (edited) movie since Aug 2006. ClearPlay looks promising.
The question you asked I often ask. As far as the King Arthur doing 3 times the money with DVD verses theater Bruckheimer answer goes, that’s a copout! It has NOTHING to do with the rating. There are tons of examples where a released movie does way better with the DVD release under the same rating. DVD rentals cost WAY less, are in stores week after week and many people would just rather rent a CERTAIN movie instead of the hassle of going to the theater to see it and pay full price along with the cost of refreshments. This is well documented in many industry magazines. Hollywood needs a wake up call.
I remember when DVDs where about to come out for the first time, it was hailed about how you would be able to choose different versions (ratings) of the movie so that families could watch them together. It just never came to be, how sad.

I pray that Clearplay will be able to function and that the Spirit of God will come against the detrimentality of what is occurring with R rated movies. Yes, writers write their scripts and want to keep all that is in it, for reality sakes, but even in reality, there is room for cleanliness and godliness. Garbage in garbage out is a good thing to live by on this plane, as its what comes from the heart that a man speaks that pollutes him. But something has to go into that heart first, and through the eyes, the pride of life, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, that becomes the conveyor of the stuff that goes into our spirit.

I am trying to find a PG-13 version of the Shawshank Redemption which is rated R. My son needs to use it as a project in school - he’s already put a lot of work into it. The class is supposed to finish the project by watching the movie - but cannot watch R-rated movies in school. Does anyone know how I can obtain a PG-13 version of this movie - or if it exists? Thank you.

It would be very nice to be able to just watch a movie,in your own home with your significant other, and not have the embarrasment of all the nudity and sex involved,it really does ruin it for me,and it’s embarrasing to see..u think they could at least make a clean version, just so we can have a choice, besides it’s supposed to be,a choice, but they don’t give us that choice…it’s pretty sad.

I pray that the movie industry will sell edited movies. I am willing to pay a few extra dollars to purchase clean edited movies. My husband and I are Christians and we enjoy watching clean edited movies. I do not see any reason why both versions of DVDs cannot be sold in the retail markets. They sell widescreen and the regular DVDs. Why can’t they do the same for clean edited movies?
