What Are You Going To Do Without Edited Movies?

So, we ought to all face the facts.  Edited movies from companies like Cleanfilms, Cleanflicks, etc are gone (at least for the foreseable future).  How are you going to respond in your household?  Will you go back to watching the same movies with the filth included?  Will you avoid movies totally?  Is anybody considering trying ClearPlay’s solution?

I still have my movies edited. I just use other companies besides CleanFilms or CleanFlicks. I tried ClearPlay, but it sucks! ClearPlay does not cut swear words, they “mute” them. People can read lips quite well. Watching the lip movement is just as offensive as hearing it. Personally, I’ve decided not to go to theaters any more for movies since the unknown vulgar content could come up at any time. If it is a popular enough movie, I will buy the DVD and then use an editing service.

  2. Donna J Parker Says:

Will not go to theaters. Will very much miss Clean Films. Would like some info on editing services. We have Guardian but need more for recent movies, etc.

  3. Christopher Says:

I will no longer buy any unedited DVD’s, even if there is nothing offensive in them. Why should I support a system where the owners won’t allow you to view their products the way you choose? They say this filth is ‘art’?! It’s the total opposite. If no other sites like CleanFlicks or CleanFilms come up, I will resort to using familyediteddvds.com or familysafemovies.com.

  4. webmaster Says:

Let me remind you, Christopher, that ClearPlay has been shielded by legislation. You might give them a try…

www.cleancutvideo.com is a source for edited movies

I don’t know what we’ll do. I mean we don’t completely depend on family flix but it’s always nice for me,as a twelve year old to be able to sit down with my family and watch the matrix! I’ll totally miss it,i’m really angry at those stupid people that won’t let us watch them edited. I mean we’re still Paying them! I won’t be able to watch billy madison anymore :(

How do I get a hold of the people at clean films in order to obtain the movies I had previously ordered almost 2 months ago which I have not yet recieved, nor have I been sent any kind of updated status regarding my order?

    To the webmaster:

Why did you delete my comment earlier regarding John P’s website? Is this a blog or an advertising tool?

I can understand your not appreciating an opinion differing from your own, but my comments were neither obscene nor inaccurate. I would hope that you would engage in healthy debate rather than practice censorship without merit (or did you think that my absence from your site constituted a lack of monitoring on my part for a response?)

  10. webmaster Says:

Sorry Chuck…didn’t mean to. I was cleaning out a bunch of spammy comments yesterday, and I must have deleted it on accident. Please repost.

    ClearPlay vs. Family edited movies.

I just read the Cuts.com website and think it has potential. I use to belong to Clean Films. I would not want to do my own editing of R-rated content because this defeats the purpose of not wanting to view it. However I would be willing to pay a reasonable fee to a company who would offer me the professional “cuts” as a dowload over the internet. Buy the “cuts”, rent or buy the movie and watch the edited version. This might sound like ClearPlay, however you don’t need their player and the edits are done by an actual person (quality) as mentions in the link above.

  12. dan Says:

Respect the artist who made the film and watch it uncut. I mean seriously people, the director puts that content in there for a reason, and if it isn’t always pretty, well, neither is life. Should you cut the violence out of Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas? It’s an indictment of the mob, not a glorification. The characters attitude towards violence, one of acceptance, is meant to distance them from the viewer: we are supposed to be digusted by their behavior, and cutting that from the film would completely destroy Scorsese’s intentions.

Not every film needs to have a “moral” but we leave all great films more enlightened individuals, “better” in a sense.

  13. lantz Says:

So Dan you’re telling me that all the “classic” motion pictures of the past that didn’t have GRAPHIC violence, sex and foul language don’t get the point across because the film didn’t include such things? Why are these director’s not stopping the editing of their films for airlines and TV? Obviously there is an audience in such places who expect these films to be edited in such situations. Our homes are such a situation, if we choose to watch edited versions.

A director can easily create a film to get his point across without such things as the past has shown. If he chooses to add such things then he will also know that his film will be edited for certain situations.

  14. Jason Says:

I agree with Iantz, we should have the right to view any and all films that have a good story, and plot points without viewing the sex, violence, and language. Really sex and language do not enhance a film at all. that is why the films with little language get better reviews and better chance of success than others who have it in. Now I do realize this is not always the case, but, we should have any and all right to watch edited films. I know I do not want my family to view inappropriate things. Even today, you cannot get away from sex and language form PG rated films or even TV. I say all this to say, that the Bible says that our mind and spirit is the temple of Jesus Christ and we need to be careful what we allow into our souls and minds, and clean films/edited films is just one tool to use for that very reason.

  15. Dan Says:

I’m not against non-violent movies. Some of the best movies ever made, old or new, don’t have or even need excessive violence (like Casablanca, Babe, or the Indiana Jones movies). And yes, unfortunetaly, there are a lot movies where blood and sex are just shoehorned into a movie with no real purpose or function (any recent horror movie). Of course, most of those movies would be terrible no matter what.

But there are many, many great movies where the violence or sex is absolutely necesary for the story or the point the director is trying to make. Have any of you ever seen the movie I mentioned, Goodfellas? Yes, it’s incredibly violent. That’s the point. Martin Scorsese was creating an indictment of the mafia and organized crime; violence is an intrical part of the characters lives, and they shrug it off like it’s nothing. When we see all that blood, we’re disgusted, and then we see the characters laugh and joke about it and we’re appaulled. If you remove the violence, the point is lost.

I respect your opinions, but I would like know what movies, specific titles, you enjoy but feel have unnecessary and unmotivated violence and/or sex?

(And Iantz, there are many directors who are very opposed to airline/TV editing of their films. Sidney Lumet had his name removed from the TV edit of Q and A)

  16. Dan Says:

So did Michael Mann, with Heat.

  17. Dave Says:

I am not a “Bible-Thumper” or right-wing Republican. I can appreciate and enjoy a violent movie strewn with curses and nudity just like the next red-blooded male American. But at the same time, I teach a Sunday School class for Jr. High kids, and there are many, excellent movies with very good life messages in them that I cannot show to “my kids” in a Sunday School environment due to language, nudity or other “inappropriate” content. I have 22+ normal, everyday, teenage kids who come to class, willingly looking to be given an education and guidance in this sometimes “screwed-up and violent world” we now live in where sports figures, politicians and many other adult-leader figures often let them down or send confusing messages by their “questionable actions”. Movies and other media sources are a huge part of these kids lives - being able to offer them a “clean” film with still a very valuable lesson in it, without it being a G-Rated cartoon or “kid” movie goes a very, VERY long way as an additional teaching tool for many kids.

It’s sad to see that legislation in our country can be twisted and abused to prevent “choices” by the consumer. Forcing us to make purchases from other countries to find “family-friendly content” movies.

  18. lori Says:

    Dave,
after reading your comment i was a bit confused. your statement,” I can appreciate and enjoy a violent movie strewn with curses and nudity just like the next red-blooded male American. But at the same time, I teach a Sunday School class for Jr. High kids,” really confused me. why is watching this kind of movie ok for you but not for a jr high student? isn’t that a hypocritical statement? God doesn’t just want our youth to stay pure but us adults as well. what message is this saying to our kids…”you have to wait until you grow up to watch violent movies strewn with curses and nudity??? come on Dave, you might want to think twice about this.

  19. Shannon Says:

    Lori,
Do you own a “content filtered” Bible? Just curious. If not then perhaps you should think twice about reading it…

A movie depicting Samson and Delilah would be full of lust and violence. Does that mean that we would be made impure simply seeing it?

  20. John Says:

Shannon’s point is clear: The Bible does include adutery, rape, homosexual acts and murder. But the Bible does not drag these out to elicit lustful responses. We all know that Hollywood could take a Bible story and make filth out of it. But God in His Word takes a horrible event and turns it into a lesson about what He wants for His children. The Bible exposes evil. Many movies celebrate it.

  21. vee Says:

As a teacher there are movies I would like to show that supports a book or lesson that I am teaching which I can’t show because one or two scenes or the severity of the content. I’m thinking of Swing Kids a movie about teens in Germany which talks of Hitler’s sensoring the type of music and art people were allowed to have. If only a few words were removed I could use this when we study the Holocaust. This may sound like a double standard but I think there is a clear difference between sensoring a persons freedom of expression and personality and editing a few words so that we can share the story with kids. I’d also like to show Stand by Me when we study flashback and foreshadowing. It is a movie about kids dealing with the issues they face. It has great value on many levels but I can’t show it in my classroom because of language. I doubt if even Stephen King would care if I cut a few words out of his story so that I could use it as a teaching tool. Are there other teachers out there facing the same thing?
