ClearPlay Now Available in Target Stores

Beginning this month, ClearPlay DVD players and subscriptions will be offered in Target stores across the country, and from the retailer’s website. ClearPlay hopes that in the coming months, additional agreements can be made with other big-name retailers such as Best Buy and Wal-Mart. This marks a major step forward for ClearPlay, and should continue to raise awareness to consumers that they have a choice when it comes to movie content.

“Consumers have responded very enthusiastically to the ClearPlay product. It makes movies a better experience for many families that are concerned about offensive content in their homes,” said ClearPlay CEO Bill Aho.

The CP-007 ClearPlay DVD Player uses a USB FilterStik to transfer movie filters from a PC or laptop to the unit. This eliminates the need for a telephone line, and should make it easier for users to quickly load new filters. ClearPlay currently offers filters for over 2,200 movies, and adds new filters each week.

Even if ClearPlay DVD players are sold at big box retailers, I still don’t think I would buy one. You can only watch the “edited version” on ONLY the ClearPlay DVD player. It just doesn’t work for watching a DVD in the SUV during long road trips or taking the DVD over to a friend’s house (who doesn’t have ClearPlay). Obviously there are a lot of advantages to using an actual editing service such as Clean DVD Movies or Flicks Club, although Flicks Club is deciding to close its doors.

For too long, We, the people of the United States who believe in and support our individual right to decide what content we ourselves will and will not view, have had these rights trampled on over and over again by the corporate bigwigs in Hollywood, who have the financial resources to abuse the legal system in order to stamp out our rights of Media Choice.

Maybe its time We took the legal battle to them — rather than waiting for them to come to us, snuffing the life one at a time out of the mom-and-pop video rental services that are simply trying to provide a more uplifting and positive entertainment experience than Hollywood is willing to provide, maybe its time we band together and SUE THEM.

Like most of us who have thus far felt obligated to stand on the sidelines and hope, I’m not a lawyer and I don’t have the financial resources to do it alone, but I am sure that if enough of us pooled our resources, we could finally bring this fight to THEIR front door and demand that OUR rights be upheld for a change!

WE, THE PEOPLE, DEMAND THAT HOLLYWOOD HONOR OUR RIGHT TO MEDIA CHOICE!

I totally agree with you Brian. Maybe there could be some sort of a grassroots movement that could be orchestrated.

I got ClearPlay 4 months ago and it’s a wast of money (and time). It is a pain in the butt to get the filters to load properly, and even then sometimes it doesn’t work. You also have to make sure that ClearPlay has a filter for the “catalog number” of the DVD you want to play. For instance, just because ‘12 Monkeys’ is widescreen doesn’t mean that ClearPlay can filter it. To my knowledge there are 3 different catalog numbers for the widescreen version of ‘12 Monkeys’ and ClearPlay only has the filter for one of them, so my DVD can not be filtered. This is not the only movie that has multiple catalog numbers.

You’re better off to use an editing service such as Family Edited Movies where the quality of editing is MUCH better than ClearPlay, and affordable at only $5 per edit.

While there may be struggles with ClearPlay, some people would probably prefer to deal with those struggles instead of using a company whose services have been found to be in violation of U.S. laws.

  6. Jim Reynolds Says:

There is no “law” in the U.S. that prohibits a person to have an edited version of their DVD. There is only a court decision against editing companies, which the studios can use to more easily sue other editing companies in the U.S. However, Family Edited Movies is a Canadian company and is not bound to honor court decisions from the United States.

ClearPlay was great til I bought the new usb player. In the last month, I’ve rented 4 R rated movies, and the filter didn’t work. The ones that work will cut out the nudity, but also 1 minute on either side of it. I hope this is a fluke.

They don’t list Clearplay online. Did Target stop carrying them?
